Laptop Hard Drive Enclosure

With the advancement in the technology of the laptops, it became highly accessible, thus giving rise to its demand. This eventually led to the huge demands of the laptop hard drive enclosures.

If we talk about hard drive enclosures, then there are basically two variants of it. One is the 3.5 inch hard drive enclosures for the desktops, while the other is the 2.5 inch hard drive enclosures for the laptops. There are many big players in the market who manufactures these laptops hard drives enclosures. As a result of intense competition, the price of these enclosures has fallen to a considerable extent.

If we go into the technical details of the laptop hard drive enclosures, then there are two different interfaces that a laptop hard drive has. The first is the USB interface and the second in the IEEE 1394 interface. The USB interface is further categorized into two types. The first one is the USB 1.1 port. It allows a maximum transmission speed of 12 Mbps only. Where as, the second is USB 2.0, which is said to have a maximum transmission speed of 480 Mbps. USB 1.1being a slow one, its enclosure has been phased out from the market. Similarly, in the case of IEEE 1394, there are two hard drive enclosures depending upon the transmission rate. The first is the 1394a, which is believed to have a maximum transmission rate of 400 Mbps. Where as the other is 1394b, with a minimum transmission rate of 800 Mbps. Among the laptop hard drive enclosures, USB 2.0 is preferred than the 1394 type. The reason behind is the low price of USB 2.0 compared to the 1394 type enclosures. Though the 1394 type enclosure in much faster than the USB 2.0 type enclosures, yet due to cheaper rate the USB 2.0 interface is widely used, as it brings down the price of a laptop hard drive enclosure to a considerable level.

Most of the people underestimate the importance of the laptop hard drive enclosures, but they should know that the enclosures are much more important than the actually visible hard disk. The inside part that remains hidden is called the PCB. The enclosure of a laptop hard drive is generally very thin and sensitive. Therefore proper care must be taken while installing and handling it, otherwise using excessive force while installation can damage the device permanently.
